Heh - exactly. As Tony said, a lot of this is simply dealing with something unfamiliar. I think that people realize very little about how much information is readily available to any interested party, all the time. Stuff like keyword-matching that Google does is relatively innocuous.

Good thing these same people haven't seen Google Analytics or the Street view on Google Maps. They'd probably become catatonic.

I think it's a psychological response that triggers the hairs on the back of your neck. Your mind suddenly thinks someone is watching your every move, simply because an automated program watching keywords in the document triggered a revelent ad.

Kind of like why people personify robots. Our brains aren't really hard wired to work in the digital age.

Nice post. As you know, I also tend to think that most issues are way too complicated to be summed up in a one-shot phrase. They're usually three-dimmensional puzzles that really require thought, research, and clarity in order to draw a semi-accurate conclusion from them. Typically, people on each side of the issue have some pretty good reasons for being where they are, even if there is only one "right" way to view the particular situation. Therefore, more study and more thought is required to move forward into a better understanding of the issue. But too often, people simply clam up and pretend that there's no other way to view something -- that anyone who disagrees (especially if they disagree with the "establishment") is evil, ignorant, belligerent, or all three.

Ah well. Occasionally, someone else manages to squirm their way out of the morass, and actually begins to use their mind to make decisions, and not their social barometer.

But anyway...

Thxs I had read Clive's excellent review of Duncan's work

I guess I'm confused by the Order vs Chaos 'lead in'
I was anticipating more than the 4 sentances

perhaps its just 7 degrees away
in that place where everything that is lost congregates

Hi, Kevin! Thanks for dropping by. I've seen some of the posts where you've talked about in work in the video space (tagging, searching, etc), and I think they'll be quantum leaps ahead when they arrive. It's just a very barren landscape out there right now for effectively consuming video and audio in faster-than-realtime playback.

I realize looking back that my post didn't come across quite the way I meant it to, and I'm going to have to expand and clarify a bit in a follow-up. My gripes are not with you, certainly, or what you're doing, nor with video per se, but with the lack of tools and the lack of effort on the part of a lot of producers.

Hi

your ping alerted me of your wanting to contact me.
We’ll see if, in an amusing irony, the linkback to his blog that Wordpress will auto-generate will draw him here to see the link he’d asked for a week or so ago."

your link to the Fast Company article leads to the Order Vs Chaos "article" but it is only 4 sentences long - where's the rest????

"Influentials:
In the "two step" model of marketing, well-connected Influentials amplify a trend by relaying media messages out to the social periphery. Marketers can therefore focus on the few as a way of reaching the many.

Accidental Influentials:
Watts's theory says the emergence of a trend depends not on Influentials, but on the susceptibility of the public to the "virus." Social-network effects are so complex, he says, that trends are basically random.

FYI I protect my email address and rely on the comment submissions to alert me of someone trying to reach me

and as this reply shows, the system does work.

and if you do have someone looking for a B2C marketer in the Toronto area - just leave me a note - and I will get back to you.

Cheers

Video is rich... perhaps too rich to make effective use of time if the viewer doesn't know what he / she is looking for. That's why I think some form of visual / audio search is key, and there is work being done in that area.

I'm personally doing all this out of my own time and money... perhaps I find it more fruitful than spending time on something that doesn't just benefits myself. I'm personally looking towards something more friendly with RSS readers... embedded flash videos aren't as accessible.
